Default POP mail disappears?

I have my Q set up to check a POP account. It works fine for sending and receiving. However, every time the software checks the server or sends a message (via Send/Receive), the existing messages in the inbox disappear.

I found this article, which seems to describe the same kind of problem but for the Treo:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/W...Case=obj(41658)

I tried that tip (even though it's different software), and retrieving just the headers didn't change this behavior at all.

Anyone have a workaround for this (including ideas if it is something to do with the server-side of things)? It's really a pain to not be able to save any messages permanently in my inbox.

Thanks for any ideas!

None of these ideas worked for me, but for Gmail users this may be helpful for fixing this problem:

Are you quickly your POP mail on a computer in between Send/Recieve events on the Q?

If so, the message may no longer be on the POP server (mail client is set to remove messages from server) where the Q is looking for the mail. It then removes it from the Inbox on the handheld. Not a great feature.

On my system, even if the message is marked as read on the POP server (not on my computer) the Q does not download it.

Very inconvenient, but we are preparing to move to an Exchange system, which will solve those issues.

Yes, this is definitely what is happening. Having used a variety of email clients over time and never experiencing a problem like this, it caught me by surprise.

I'm guessing that switching to an IMAP account would eliminate this annoyance. I just can't believe there's not a setting to preserver local copies of messages...

After making the switch from Treo to Q, I found this particularly annoying, especially with regard to Sent items. I work in the consulting field where I have to cover myself from liability by preserving everything I send someone. I am still looking for an easy way to copy my Q's sent items to my email archives.

The Treo allowed me to send myself a BCC on every message, putting the correspondance back in my Inbox. I have yet to find a way to do that with the Q.

Yep, I have exactly the same needs in terms of keeping a trail of messages (that I can access even if I'm away from my computer).

I did read somewhere in researching this issue (can't find the link now)- that you could move messages to your "Drafts" folder and they'd stay safe there. Less than ideal but could be used to save a few important messages (depending upon whether this saves to internal memory or card, this would be more or less helpful)...

Honestly, that depends on how Outlook is set up. There is an option (I believe there is also one on the Q) which you can use to tell Outlook to leave a copy of the message on the server. This should keep you getting all emails at both the Q and Outlook. However, you may fill your mailbox.

If you are only getting some messages in both places I would guess that both the Q and Outlook are set to remove messages from Gmail after they have been downloaded, precenting them from being in both places. As a note, I don't know of anyway to sync POP mail Inbox to Outlook desktop.

My configuration:
1. Q is set to leave messages on the server.
2. Outlook removes them.
This way, when my laptop is not on, all my email goes to my Q. Once I turn on the laptop, all email is downloaded from the POP server to Outlook. Sure I have to mark things are read, etc., but it is the easiest solution I have found. Besides, if I am at my desk, I don't need the Q's email capability.

Now, if someone could just find a way to move the sent messages from the Q's mail client to Outlook...

I'm seeing the same thing. I changed the gmail settings so email stays in my inbox after outlook/motoq retreive it. But as you said - once the email is read it's all over. So I configured my primary gmail account to forward to another email account (you could also use a non-gmail account such as one from your ISP). I point my MotoQ to the second account to retreive email. The motoq has the 1st gmail address in the "email address" field - so when I send/reply from the MotoQ people think it's from the gmail account. I can also CC to my gmail account so I get a copy on my desktop and my motoQ.

hope that helps

Desktop software gmail disapearing

I tried the tip it worked for me. I went To my g mail on my Q, then I went to options and where you put in your username@gmail.com it said to put recent:username@gmail.com And now my gmail stays when I hit send and receive. Thanks for the link.. Disapearing mail was corrected by just putting recent: in frount of my username@gmail.com.. Hope this helps others too.
