| PDAnet. THIS THING ROCKS!!!! Was going to be spending time in the hospital taking care of my mom (she's doing well bty). I wanted to be able to surf the net while there but knew there was no WiFi network in which to log. So upon the suggestion of VT Dr0p 0ut I tried PDAnet (for a mere $35.00, on sale elsewhere if you look). It was way ez to install and even easier to use. There I am in my mom's hospital room (while she was asleep of course) surfing at better than dial-up speed. The even sweeter part is I'm not paying Verizon their $15.99 more a month for the privelege (after already paying them $40.00 per month for their so called "unlimited" data package) . As long as I stay under the Verizon 5 Gig limit I'm golden. This thing is so cool. Do yourself a favor & check this software out. Best to all & thanx VTDr0p0ut. -Z- |

Best to all & thanx VTDr0p0ut. -Z- | Hello all, new q user, switched form treo 650 few days ago, used the 650 for 2 years, AWESOME PHONE! but I wanted better reception, LOUDER volume, and faster internet. So far I am happy with the q, and am getting used to navigating, as it is quite different form a touch screen 650. most used prog is google maps, and the touch screen was nice on that, but the dpad works pretty damn good on the q. but I had to respond after reading the verizon internet price...
It always amazes me at the prices that people are paying for unlimited internet with other wireless companies. I have sprint, and they are by far the best deal in wireless. They have the SERO plans, and then they have hybrid plan that the sprint retention line can give you that is just like the SERO. I got my q for $75 no rebates, and my new plan is $40 a month for 1000 anytime, unlimited nights and weekends start at 7pm, unlimited sprint to sprint, POWER VISION, and all the little things like caller id, long distance... with my employee discount im playing $30 a month.... I just had to say something because it is hilarious and sad that verizon gets away with $40 a month unlimited internet plans...
I was going to wait for the iphone, but even cingular is a rip off for internet, and I want a physical keyboard...
just wanted to voice my thoughts on the verizon internet price issue brought up. well hey, i guess you do have to pony up for the excellent army network that follows you around!?!?! lol |

| Ok, I just have a few questions regarding PDANET. I have been reading the threads and just need clarification.
1. Does this allow you access IE without paying the Power Vision prices? (it is understood that you could be in violation of the contract if you are caught)
2. Do you download the software on your pc first?
Thanks in advance! |

#1: Signal strength. I don't want to sound like a Verizon commercial, but their claims for best network coverage have been 100% true in my experience. I did briefly try Sprint, and had to immediately cancel within the two week trial period because signal strength went from horrible to completely non-existant. I was Christmas shopping at the local mall, and it was 100% dead. Couldn't use it at all. Granted, this was about 3 years ago and they may have improved, but it's tough to give them a second chance. Same goes with AT&T/Cingular. I had an AT&T phone (before the merger) through my work, and I had to convince my work to let me use my Verizon personal phone instead and just kick me back reimbursement every month, for the same reasons as above. My own home was a big dead zone and I had to walk outside just to receive or make a call. Again, they've probably improved (especially since the merger), but I have no desire to try them again either.
#2: My family, my wife's family, and virtually all of our friends scattered all over the western half of the country are using Verizon. We've grown accustomed to having that unlimited calling. More companies are starting those "favorite five" things to try tearing away people like me, but it's still a difficult decision that I could easily regret... not to mention that I would still be causing the person on the other end to use their airtime.
Regardless, I just renewed again and bought a Q, so any consideration of changing networks just went out the window. I'll go ahead and pay for the ability to make all the calls I want without considering the minute usage (something that can be EASILY under appreciated) and knowing I've got a good signal, including EVDO just about everywhere I go locally.
Of course, I *do* wish they could offer a better deal on data plans, but all things considered, this is still going to work out best for me.

| Do you need a dial up ISP? So do you have to have a dail up ISP account for my phone to contact? I'm a little lost with how this program works. Is the phone calling a dail up ISP for service, or does PDANET some how, convert your phone in to a make shift router (to share its data conection?) I have Sprint ($15/month Unlimited Data Plan), and I'm pretty sure I am already able to do this, I haven't had a chance to try it. Has any other sprint users had success with thier Q without using PDANET? |

But I would like to know how you got them to give you the hybrid plan. If you can please share that knowledge with me. Thank you.

It uses your smartphone webproxy to get access to the internet. No dial up costs, works great. You need to have activesync downloaded on your notebook, then download PDANet, click connect, and Voila. Like others have said there is a 5gb bandwidth limit through Verizon. I don't know what Sprints deal is but check your provider. I monitor mine online. |

I can't get my Q and laptop to sync via acitvesync. I'm not sure how to word this, but here it goes: Do you only need acitvesync to install PDANET on the Q? Or do you need activesync to obtain the web connection? To make this question a little less confusing, if I can't get my Q to sync with my laptop am I out of luck for surfing the web on my laptop?
I am able to get my Q to sync with my desktop.
Thanks again!! |

| You need an active activesync connection for pdanet to work. It can be wired or BT but AS must show a connection. |

| The 5 Gb Limit Hey Gang,
One our fellow community members answered one of my other post with this. Here is a link to a site that will help the mathamatically challenged (such as I) convert kilobytes (the measrement used in the data usage report Verizon sends you in the form of a text message when you dial #DATA & hit send) to Gigabytes. This way you can see how close you really are to approaching the dreaded 5 Gigabyte limit and the consequences thereof which are fast becoming the stuff of urban legends. Enjoy! -Z- http://www.draac.com/byte-converter.html |
