Default Opera Mobile input.ini file

Opera mobile has a file in the \Application Data\Opera directory called input.ini. You can define shortcuts to many of the menu functions in [WinCE Application] section of that file. Some shortcuts already available are:

* - Toggle Full Screen mode
# - Change between Fit To Screen/Desktop

There are other shortcuts in that section preceded by a number. I found those functions work much better if you use a letter. I think the browser traps for those sometimes. I redefined some of the keys and dug around and found a couple more. I haven't had to use the soft keys since. It really simplifies browsing. I have defined the following:

O = Open url
N = Open link in new page
P = Close page
T = Cycle to next window
Q = Exit

Pressing the keys cause the menu functions to activate:

O - Go To
N - Open In New Window
P - Close Window
T - Next Window
Q - Exit

I also found some edit boxes don't like the center button. It also presses the Continue button at the end of a form. I copied the line for Enter in the [Browser Widget] section and changed the Enter on the second line to Space. Now you can press the center button or space to activate the edit box. There are a Space and a Space Shift in that section. Remove those two lines. There is also a page up, page down, and go to start functions preceded by numbers. I have not tried, but I think they would also work better if they were changed to letters.

Which version of opera Mobile is this? I've been using the new version4 beta and it is amazing. Super fast and it zooms in and out sort of like the iphone. Fast to change display formatting and scrolls quick. Downloads pages faster than anything I've seen. Very cool!

You have Opera Mini, not Opera Mobile. The advantage of mapping the keys is you can bypass many keystrokes to perform an operation. To close a window, you would have to press the right soft key, press up three times to get to the Windows menu, press Enter to open the submenu, press down twice to get to Close Window, and press Enter. The way I set the file, I only need to press the 'P' key. The window will close. It takes only one keystroke instead of six or eight.

I don't use Opera Mini, so I am not sure if this file is available for that browser. You may want to look on their support site or send them an e-mail. I have sent them questions before. They have been pretty responsive.

You can change the navigation keys there -- definintely better with letter keys on a qwerty keyboard.
