I've been searching for a solution that will allow me to get off of the Windows/Outlook "standard" (note to Bill G.: I do not think that word means what you think it means

) for some time now, as I'd really like to run Ubuntu on my laptop. My perfect world would consist of being able to sync a local app on the laptop (Evolution, most likely), the local apps on the Q, and my Google Calendar/contacts, as seamlessly as possible.
Well, after Googling a bit this morning, it appears as if nirvana has arrived. There is an open-source project formerly called Sync4j, now called Funambol, that does exactly this. Essentially, it's your own private Blackberryesque server. Yes, it is a server, and the installation is likely a bit technical, but hey, I'm always up for a challenge. It helps that another Q user has already installed and confgured this (his most reassuring comment? It
just works. (emphasis his)).
h, and did I mention that it's FOSS? Per their license page:
The Open Source License allows you to use the software at no charge under the condition that if you use Funambol code in an application you redistribute, the complete source code for your application must be available and freely redistributable under reasonable conditions.
