Arrow Motorola security / update

Hello,

Being that the motoQ allows 3rd party apps to be installed, is there a risk of a virus or a dialer viurs (virus that dials 1-900 numnbers without the owners knowing)?

Also, being that it has windows on it, is there a "windows/security update" program on it? If not, how can i know if there has been a software release of an OS update

Thank you,
Paul

I keep hearing that the Windows Mobile Security Update is supposed to be released by Verizon & Motorola this month (some of the postings I've seen thought it might even be today). Motorola should have it on their website when it passes the VZW testing.

All the best, Zzap

Update: according to contacts at VZW and MS - it looks like September?

Default similar question

I worry less about online surfing bringing me virus or other problems (I currently have the internet blocked via Verizon) but I am planning on downloading 3rd party freeware apps to try out, and wanted to know if anyone can recommend a way to check that what I'm getting is not going to be harmful.

I know with other downloads (PC, linux)you can do a checksum to make sure nothing has been altered from the original developers version, but I'm not sure how that works with mobile software.
Usually if I'm downloading something for my pc, I try to go to a reputable site, where I'm pretty much assured they've done some checking/filtering.

Case in point... I went to download TCPMP just now to try out, but the developers site appears to be down. However a google search found another site that I was able to download from, and while the file has got the right name, I'm a little leery to install it. (this is from Freewareppc.com)

I'm being paranoid... but like they say...
