Program installation on WM5 is pure hell - and virtually undocumented. There are no instructions on adding software in the manual, or on the Motorola Q website - its almost like either Motorola or Microsoft don't want you to add any software- or perhaps because there is so little software that will actually RUN on WM5.

The easiest way to install a CAB file is to download it to your PC. Then connect your device to the computer so that ActiveSync is running. Using File Manager, drag and drop your CAB file onto your My Device, which should appear under "My Computer" in File Manager. Once that is done, go to your device - select Start, then find File Manager on your Q. Navigate to the CAB file, click the center button to watch the program unpack. Then you will very frequently get the message that "This software is not intended to run on your device".

Default RAR Files?

Hi - I downloaded a free calculator program which is a .rar file. I have tried transferring this file to the Q, but it doesn't recognize it. I also tried unzipping all the files first on my computer, and then transferring them. No dice. Any ideas how to install a .rar file?

You need a utility like WinRAR to unpack a .RAR file. Assuming there is a .cab inside, you copy that .cab over to your device and launch it there.

winrar is exactly what I downloaded. I extracted all the files...and there was no .cab file!

If there is no .cab, then there is usually a readme file telling you what to do. Is there a folder in the .rar file? Maybe a folder needs to be copied to your device. If there is just a .exe file, it could be as simple as copying that to your device and launching it.
If you still have trouble, post the .rar file here, or a link to where you downloaded it from--maybe we can figure it out.

Default Installing Programs - Issues

OK - I managed to find the cab files. I just tried installing candlelight and a moto phone alarm. Once installed, my "start" button and "contacts" button stopped working. So, I removed the programs, and now my backlight is stuck in a powered down mode (from candlelight I guess) - how do I get it back to normal?

And...now I am afraid to install any 3rd party software - this is all stuff I found on this site!

you have to run Candlelight again. I believe going into the Camera also removes Candlelight's effects.

The latest version of WinZip also supports .rar files. Been using it for a while and it's free to try. www.winzip.com
