I am waiting to receive a used Q I bought on EBay and am looking at the update threads. I have never seen so many conflicting reports of rants/raves as there are on doing the software update.
I first assumed I would get the phone, check the software, and do the update, but it doesn't seem that simple as decision. I just can't understand how people's experiences can vary so much.
So, what's your advice? Live with whatever is on the Q for software and upgrade if it stinks? Or do the upgrade first thing?

I updated mine, just cause when it came out, I was too new to know any better. Now I probably wouldn't. However, I haven't had any major problem pre or post update. Good Luck!

I usually jump on updates as soon as they are released and I do have the latest MOL3, I have never experienced any negative effects from an update, maybe becasue I have not hacked the registry, I am surprised at the number of posts with issues they attribute to this update.
If the phone is new to you and you have no software on it, I think it'd be a no-brainer.
The choice comes into play when you have to weigh doing an update vs spending hours re-installing all of your software.
For me, I've seen some noticeable positive effects with the upgrade (profimail works installed to the storage card, weather watcher works at all, on MOL2 sometimes after a reboot, the phone wouldn't fully boot up and I had to pull the battery, that hasn't happened yet on MOL3).
There definitely was some good work done under the hood here.
I'm with lexluthor on this one. I bought my Q used off ebay about two weeks ago and the first thing I did was run the update. I haven't had any problems whatsoever. It's a great way to be certain you are starting with a clean slate and also if you didn't update right away and then later decided to you then need to deal with the hassle of reinstalling or recreating everything you have already done.
only update if you're experiencing issues . . . otherwise, when you get your Q, turn it on, fool around with it and get to know it and see if you start experiencing issues.
updating on day 1 is like bringing a newborn baby home from hospital and trying to . . . . just get to know your baby before you up and change it.
you just might have a perfectly working Q.

have you experienced any negative effects before any updates (reason why you updated)? maybe your Q never had to be updated at all?

I also usually jump right in on any software updates. Did the MOL3, have had no problems. Yes, its a pain to have to reinstall 3rd party apps, but such is life. I also have not had the bothersome "partial boot" since MOL3 that I used to get under MOL2.
If I hadn't just gotten my phone customized to the point where I'm happy with it (yet again), I'd do the update. If I had a "fresh" phone, I'd do the update.
My $0.002 .. or, 0.002¢, depending on how you do your math..
