Default Google Mobile App

Has anyone had any success downloading and getting the Gmail for phones app on their Q?

I'm a *very* heavy gmail user and find the web interface OK, but rather slow (3G service in my area averages about 200 kbps). From what I've been able to gather the gmail mobile app is a J2ME (mobile java) based application, and I've been unable to find a J2ME runtime binary for the Q so far.

Anyone had any luck with getting J2ME on their phone?

Because of the volume of mail that passes through my gmail account I don't want to setup POP access to it on my phone, I do that with my primary desktop anyway.

I use the outlook program on the phone to download gmail. You need to create a new account within the program (on the q) , and it will set it up for you automatically. Make sure your preferences within gmail allow for POP access.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but I reallly don't want to do that, I have POP access setup on my primary desktop, and receive about 200 emails a day on average.

The reasoning for using the gmail app is it acts like a dedicated browser client in a way - the actual mail doesn't get downloaded to the phone, it stays on the server, and notifies you of new mail as it arrives, then you can view/reply like you can via the web browser.

If I setup POP access on my Q I'd overload the memory in a couple of days with all the mail I receive

Here is how to get a mobile JVM on your Q.

http://www.qusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1220

Follow the instructions on about the 5th post down. I got it installed and was able to run a couple sample J2ME apps. However, I have been unsuccessful in getting "gmail for mobile" to work. I think it is because the phone does not recognize any file association with the application. When go to gmail.com/app it tries to open the file. i think i need to just download it and then open it within the java machine on my own.

If anybody out there knows how to get my hands on the gmail file (probably a *.jab file) I'll see if I can get it to run. But as of right now i can't test the program if i can't download it.

Does anyone know if a Gmail app is in the works for Smartphones?

The Gmail mobile web interface is absolutely terrible, particularly because you can't "Reply All" in large e-mail threads.

I set up Gmail pop to hit my Outlook, but I can't deal with the number of e-mails I receive. The way Gmail organizes conversations is one reason why I find it so useful; my work has me participating in large e-mail threads, sometimes hitting going up to as many as 70 messages.

Considering they came out with Google Maps intended specifically for smartphones. I would think that they will come out with the gmail app.

I had the JVM working with the Gmail app, the only annoying thing is typing those damn URLs in. I eventually gave up on it and went back to the web interface due to the poor text quality.
