Getting Video files/DVDs on the Q

Ok... I now have DVD Catalyst as an upgrade of my old program.
I've got Core Player, which looks really groovy.

I want to convert some .avi files and slap them on the phone for later viewing.

BUT... do I really have to play the ENTIRE .avi movie/TV show before it will convert it? I read that if it was divx rather than .avi it would just convert it right away.

Any .avi to divx converters? I dug around for some, but they seem rather arcane.

What are people doing to get videos on their Q?

What I want to know is when using PocketDivX, is there a way to do chapters? I use cladDVD.net, then shrink it down nice with PocketDivX and that works fine. I see the movie perfectly with TCPMP.

Is there a way to play the DVD in its entirety (chapters, menu, scene selection, special features, etc.)?? Would I need to run a different encoding software for this to
happen?
