Default downloadable phone book for cell phones?

has anyone ever seen a downloadable phonebook file for cell phones? what im wondering is there a local phone book that you can just put on your phone so you can look up any number in your city? like a portable phone book. maybe this sounds weird but it would save on 411 charges. i tried looking around but have never seen such a thing. any ideas?

So many great tools out there for free lookup of phone numbers and addresses I can't believe anyone uses 411 anymore. I love Live Search for this... tell it what city you're in and speak the POI you want. Select from the list and click to call. It takes far less time than a call to 411.

I think the OP's issue was that he did not have a data plan to use these other options.

Personally, I don't think there would be enough demand for what the OP is suggesting (downloadable phone book). There are just too many other ways to get the info (even without a data enabled phone) - you could search for the info on your PC at work or before you leave the house, look for phone book wherever you might be at the moment, or someone you're with will probably have data access on their phone, and of course, there's 411 for those times when you just have to have a number. I would think that people who need this kind of immediate access to such information at all times would not get a downloadable phone book, they would get a data plan on their phone.

Hey,

I used to use this like it was going out of style.

http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/sms/

It's quick, and very accurate. I would put a name, and a zip code and it would give me their address and phone number.

You can test right on the webpage - otherwise, you do it via txt messages.

If you have txt included in your plan, then this service is 100% free.

Let us know,

Matt!
