Doom

I have three different Doom applications installed on my Q, wanted to share...

-Versions-
DoomCE (almost fullscreen, slow to turn, buttons not to my liking)
DoomSPV (fullscreen, fast play, buttons not to my liking)
CellDoom (not fullscreen, fast play, like the buttons)

-Minimal Install-
I have (only) these files setup on my Storage Card as follows :

\Storage Card\Program Files\Doom\CellDoom.exe
\Storage Card\Program Files\Doom\doom1.wad
\Storage Card\Program Files\Doom\DoomSPV.exe
\Storage Card\Program Files\Doom\wmdoom.exe
\Storage Card\Program Files\Doom\DoomSPV\doom1.wad

The additional DoomSPV folder and doom1.wad are there because thats where DoomSPV.exe looks for the WAD file. I could have placed celldoom.exe and wmdoom.exe into the DoomSPV folder if I wanted so as to only need one copy of the WAD file (but I have plenty of space on my card).

Most of the downloads include other files when you unzip or install, the files I have listed above are the only ones required.

Is there any reason to use this old version? this version seems obsolete since the new cab file is alot faster with better gameplay settings and easier to install with just a cab file.

Well he actually posted three different versions (including what I think you consider the new version). I think the point was to put all the versions he could find (with a quick like/dislike) in place for everyone to try them to find the one that works best for them.

My phone runs very slow after I quit the game. However, the game itself runs perfectly... When I go to task manager it's not there so I am not really sure what is causing the low perfomance...

DoomSPV is extremely slow on my Q9c...takes quite a while to load, and then once it does load, it responds very slowly to all commands.

CellDoom also requires you to have a WAD file stored in one of a few directories on your phone, so just installing the CellDoom app is not sufficient.
It is BY FAR the best Doom app (and it has good sound support!), but it's unfortunate that it doesn't quite fit the screen...it's very hard to see what is going on, and while not terrible, the controls are still pretty clunky.

keeping the spirit of the thread alive, and adding some more content based on this weekend's experimenting.

CellDoom - http://www.smartphone.net/software_detail.asp?id=665
pros: fast play, good button control (including strafe and gama settings), can load any of a few different WAD files (tested DOOM Ultimate, Doom TNT, DOOM 2, and DOOM Plutonia)

cons: not fullscreen and distorts normal aspect ratio; buttons require use of "send" and "end" keys "home" and "back" buttons, which can sometimes confuse your phone; some sounds are played on the phone, even if a headset is paired.


RCX Doom - http://www.smartphone-freeware.org/download/rcx-doom
pros: full screen w/ correct aspect ratio (small gray bars at the top & bottom), works with standard keyboard inputs, and lets you type in typical codes; all sounds are ported to headset if paired

cons: does not let you select which WAD file to use; can't strafe; does not work with DOOM 2 or DOOM Plutonia (title screen loads, but crashes when you start a game)
