This issue is really a limitation of POP email, and one of the reasons IMAP and MAPI (MS Exchange) are better solutions (POP is now an outdating email protocol). I am not sure about AOL, but most POP email based providers have an option/setting which specifically keeps the email on the server until you delete it from the server.
Usually, I would say that you can forward your POP email to a free gmail account, but AOL does not allow "forwards" (at least that use to be the case). That said, gmail may still be the solution, because it allows you to "pull" email from any email into gmail (rather than push from AOL). Pulling into gmail has the added advantage of effectively archiving all of your email in perpetuity, which can then be searched in the future with its inherent (robust) search capability.
