Hey Guys,
This is a quick question. Slingbox(.com), which currently sells the box that allows you to broadcast your digital cable signal over your broadband connection so you can access it via the internet, has now released a PocketPC copy of their remote software. I have seen the quality of PC receiver software which is quite good but I'm somewhat skeptical on the quality of the new Mobile software. Has anyone seen the mobile software yet or any similar software to slingbox? I would appreciate the input, thanks.
There is slingbox mobile software specifically for WM5 smartphone and the Q. The quality is pretty good and setup is not so difficult. They have a free 30 day trial, but it's $30 or so after that. A lot of people use ORB, since it's free.
I am one of those users who uses the mobile slingplayer for my Q. In fact, I watched the entire OSU-Michigan game on my Q as we were driving. Here is my assessment:
If you have a good signal on the EV network, it is almost flawless. However, be prepared to try and read the score on a small screen. You MUST watch it in full screen mode. If you phone signal drops or you are on the old network, it can get choppy but is still playable (hey I am watching TV on my phone). Down to one bar and it will stop streaming. I can also tell you that four hours of consecutive play will kill the extended battery (I had three batteries ready to watch this game and got to the second one). Also, please make sure you have the unlimited data plan if you are going to use the SlingPlayer. Finally keep in mind that Verizon is not fond of streaming video, so I use it only as a backup to my laptop.
Orb is free and I looked it at but if I remember correctly it requires a computer at home that is hooked to the TV. I only have my laptop so it would not work for me (someone correct me if I am wrong).
Orb does require a pc at home with a tv card in it. It is not compatible with all tv cards either. It is free and does work well when everything is compatible. It also allows you to watch saved video, view pictures, or even access files on your home pc depending upon how you set it up.
Remember, both of these are officially a violation of your contract with verizon.
