Question ? about PDAnet Software

A million thanx to VT Dr0p 0ut for his recommendation on PDAnet. It is so simple to use it's a little scary.

Here's my question: PDAnet is automatically on after having appled soft resets the Q. I can't seem to find a way to change that. Can anyone help?

It is only a minor annoyance given how great the software works but still, I'd prefer the default status be that PDAnet is off until needed & activated. That way it would save battery life and the need for me to go in and kill it manually via tasks every time I reboot.

Thanx Gang Best, -Z-

I hear so much positive things about PDANet. Are there any negatives or things that are not so good? I can't find one person that has anything bad to say about the program... It has to be something that is not that great. If the thread starter is correct, then this would be the 1st strike that I'd have on this app...

Is this program good enough to cancel my comcast broadband connection on my home computer and just use this?

Before you cancel your internet and start using the PDAnet, you need to check out your phone plan. There might be some charges if you use too much.

If I understand you correctly, you cannot turn off your PDAnet? From the 'Start' menu, you can click on PDAnet. When it opens, you can "Stop PDAnet." IF that is what you need?

Clearly PDANet is a good application. The only "bad" thing? You are violating your contract. I realize not eveyone sees it that way and many feel like it's justified theft, but technically your are stealing service (please spare me the rebuttals--I've heard them all).

Do not cancel your home broadband connection. VZW put a 5Gb limit on data--your service can be terminated if you go over that limit. It's not meant to be your sole connection to the Internet.

To prevent PDANet from automatically starting up after turning on your phone:

Using your favorite File Manager (I use resco explorer) navigate to
\Windows\StartUp and delete PDANet.lnk

In order to turn it on when you need to tether just click on the PDANet icon from your start menu.

Having PDANet startup automatically is not that bad, it doesn't take up a large RAM memory footprint, but I can understand that you would want total control of how your phone operates. Also, the drain on battery life when the task is running idly is barely noticeable.

@Koolwater:

Just like My-Q stated, Verizon has put a 5 GB cap on "unlimited" data plans. Going over this cap would be cause for Verizon to terminate your plan. Plus the speed of EVDO is good for light tethered surfing, email, etc., it can't compare to the speed of High Speed Cable/DSL.

At least not Verizon's.... but I'm actually faster than "cheap" DSL on Sprint connection (980/160 on a good day, 840/80 on a bad one). Plus, there is no limit. However, due to the spring SA:

Quote:
Sprint PCS Vision: Not available where use is in connection with server devices or host computer applications, other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions, or as substitutes for private lines or frame relay connections. Sprint PCS Vision Packs are not available: (1) with any other device used in connection with a computer or PDA - including phones, smart phones or other devices used with connection kits or similar phone-to-computer/PDA accessories; and (2) with Bluetooth Sprint PCS Vision Phones used as a modem in connection with other devices. Sprint reserves the right to deny or to terminate service without notice for any misuse. Credits for Premium Services do not carry forward and are not available for use with all services. Sprint PCS Vision -Data Usage Only is available for use with connection cards and PDAs, but is not available for use with Blackberry devices.
I believe it's safe to say PDAnet violates it as well (although the language isn't nearly as clear or restrictive as VZW's)

I use PDAnet for about 5-10 minutes a day and do no streaming. I feel confident that I am safe from VZW's vengeance. I'll be using it for the next three weeks while at annual training. Just enough to check my email and do homework.

No porn on PDAnet. Uses too much bandwidth.

Certainly not! You need a cable modem for that.
