I've had that issue as well. It is not an optical illusion. I set my backgrounds at 72 DPI, and build from there. I think that Pony may have found the reason why.

Some gradients I've built have no issue, others big issues. Haven't figured out why. If you look at my Matrix homescreen, and my Shockcity (done for Deej_memixx) you can see the difference.

It may also be accredited to the compression of a JPG. Setting it at a low compression will save some space, but it certainly affects the image quality when displayed.

BTW, how do I get the clock in the iconbar?
to put the clock in the icon-bar you need Orange plugin (you can get it at n99hockey's apps page) and this is the code i use:

Quote:
<!-- time & iconbar -->
<plugin width="320" handlekeys="CHILD" clsid="{A2536C57-6AC2-4c31-9542-B144B0E9D077}">
<shortcut width="100">
<plugin name="date_time" height="30" clsid="{E09043DF-510E-4841-B652-388316977A7A}">
<clock>
<time font-size="30" font-weight="bold" fgcolor="COLOR_HOMETEXT" valign="bottom" halign="center" mode="short" padding-left="5"/>
</clock>
</plugin>
</shortcut>
<shortcut width="220">
<plugin clsid="{837FC251-FE69-43ad-84E0-EBCEDEBA0884}" name="iconbar">
<iconbar fgcolor="COLOR_HOMETEXT"/>
</plugin>
</shortcut>
</plugin>

After looking more closely at the images (without my contacts), I think you're right. The Pocket PC version exhibits the banding on the gradients and the blocky areas around the fonts associated with JPEG compression.

Either less compression should be used or the image should be saved as a bitmap or PNG file (whatever the Home screen application supports), I think.
