ok people... the place where i work run a domain w/ a Windows 2000 server and here is the problem (i thought there might be some smart admins here, i got roped into being the admin of an existing network) for print reasons i want to give 1 user a static IP while the rest gets one assigned, i setup a static IP on that pc but if other people logon first they are "stealing" the IP.. any ideas ?

how is DHCP scope defined? you could set that static IP in an "exclusion" range so DHCP doesn't dole out that IP. or just set your static IP to an address that is out of the range of the DHCP scope?

like if the IP's you're handing out are 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.100, set the static IP to 192.168.1.200?

yeah i was thinking of giving that pc a high IP so it's less likely to be "handed" out.. on the other hand, i was hoping to just change things on the server, if i give that IP a new IP i have to re-configure multiple pc's. (and you know, that takes time away from this place :}

since i give that pc a low IP, maybe i can change the start range you know what i mean ?

yeah, that's probably the quickest, easiest way (maybe set aside a couple more low IP addresses in the range to give yourself more flexibility to add more PC's or printers that may need a static IP).

well... i was making life too hard on myself and came to the realization today that i could just reserve/assign a IP address on the router using the MAC address and pc name.
