A few hours later, there has been a software unlock. Add to that, someone has said yet another software lock will be available tomorrow for $50 at high noon.

Big news at EIP, but I was surprised at how big. I was on my way home from the gym and they had it on CBS News Radio 88. Steve Jobs must be flipping out.

yea this was plastered all over CNN.com and MSN.com
pretty interesting that they figured out how to do this so soon!

so the unlock process is only being sold for 50 bucks?
or is that a program to lock the device?

AT&T is PISSED and is wanting to take legal action against those that unlock the phone.

Unlike other mobile phones, you can leave the store without any contract. There are hacks out there to activate the iPhone. Add the unlock and you'd have a lot of T-Mobile users buying iPhones. This would also allow international customers to buy an iPhone for use on Orange, Vodafone, etc. I believe Apple gets a slice of the customer pie, so it might not be so great for them either. Of course, the end result will be more iPhones being sold. That can't be all that bad for the manufacturer. This issue wouldn't be at the magnitude it is, if it weren't for the 5 year exclusive w/ AT&T.

In a twist, someone has offered 100k to have them release it for free. There is no law against unlocking ones cellphone. Selling it is a different story.

I predict it'll be available for free, but they'll require some sort of sign up.

The ongoing unlock saga continues...
