Default tv / cable

so someone gave me a rather large Mitsubitshu, works good and everything but here's the "issue" i have a cable box so i use the cable box's remote.. everything works except the volume & mute button. (i had this "issue" before with another tv and therefor moved that one to the bedroom.. but now i'm baffled and not sure what to do... went through all the settings but can't find a darn thing/settings that makes it works.

anyone ?

I think Scott is right, the cable remote needs to be programmed for the TV. You could call the cable company and ask?
