Default True sportsmanship!

Nice article...

As a father, I hope that I can raise my athletes to appreciate this.

Yes they talked about this on the Today show this morning, almost brought a tear to my eye. If only those in professional sports could show such compassion.

You think that you would see this type of class more and more these days with children now getting rewarded with trophies, plaques, certificates, medals, etc. just for playing. In my day, that didn't happen. You were rewarded for coming in 1st and that was it, depending on the sport. If you wanted a trophy, you tried harder (worked/practiced more to improve skills) next year.

Sometimes , I think that some issues society has can be attributed to rewarding people just for trying and not accomplishing anything other than trying. Leading people to believe that just trying is good enough, no other effort is required. People want things without earning them. Kind of along the lines of people who want to lose weight, but don't want to exercise (work) for it. Just want instant weight loss through a pill, nothing else.

which makes me think of this great quote:

"They keep finding new ways to celebrate mediocrity. - Mr Incredible - The Incredibles"

Winning should definitely be celebrated, but winning at all costs? From my understanding the home run in question helped the team win. So if the opposing team stood by and didn't help and went on to win should that win have be celebrated to?

I think my question makes sense!

I think my question makes sense!
If the other team did not go out and help, then the win would still have been celebrated. The celebration would have remained in some city, some state, USA's newspaper.

I agree with you that winning at all costs should not be rewarded. That isn't true sportsmanship in any sport.

However, I don't think that this article could be seen as winning at all costs, if the other team didn't help out after the HR. The rules would allow for the injured player to be substituted and the HR would only be a single. No foul play involved and probably an eventual win for the other team. It just wouldn't have made national headlines.
