And that's why I love being a soldier. My unit (yes, the band does go to war) helped in the liberation of Luxemburg 64 years ago (specifically a town called Wiltz). We even have a chapter in their history books! My unit was ordered to hold Wiltz to give Patton time to reinforce Bastogne. Unfortunately (being a band) they didn't fare too well against the German Armor. The roster at the beginning of the day had 40 people, by the end of the day it had 8.
When I was ofer there in 2004 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of their liberation there were still people who cried at the sight of the red keystone on my shoulder.
While I can't say you're welcome (since I wasn't there), your thanks is appreciated.

Cinco de Mayo ain't Dutch but surely know that...

Paco: my main reason for being thankful is that both my parents and most of the early school-years teachers told me so many stories (which fascinated me then and still) about that time.. on the graveyard in my hometown there's a corner for the mostly Canadians, Polish and some American/British soldiers that lots their lives.. pretty amazing & enough reason to thank the liberators..

It was an amazing generation of people. To leave home and family to help people they had never met before.

only thing similar is the may 5 and liberating.

i was thinking what was interesting as well is many of those soldiers back then were first generation Americans. Specifically speaking, like my Grandfather who was born here, but siblings werent.

I love historical stuff
