Default PC programs that might prove useful

RudeBoy's problems with his co-workers PC had me thinking that there isn't a general list of programs that ppl could use to stay safe and clean while surfing. Even my bro-in-law called about problems with his computer & he had 14 virii! Depended on Windows XP firewall (a big no-no) & Norton Anti-Virus. (That worked out well didn't it?) Got everything cleaned up, updated, and stuff installed with this list. He's happy, PC's happy & I don't have to mess with his PC for a few months. *fingers crossed*

Free Stuff

Spywares:
SpyBot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

LavaSoft Adaware 2007
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
(Be alert, will want you to sign into things that you don't need. It's still free without the signups)

SpyWare Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
(Excellent....stops spyware from installing..donation ware)

A-squared Free
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/
(Excellent...they have other free products, also. Donation ware)

AVG Anti-Spyware
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download...yware/us/frt/0

PC Cleaners

Reg Cleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
(Excellent...donation ware)

FireWall
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
(Excellent...Free & always will be)

AntiVirus:
Comodo Antivirus
http://antivirus.comodo.com/
(Free & always will be. I tried this when in beta, to stay on top I'm sure it's much improved)

AVG
http://avg.download--free.net/
(Free....)

Mail Checker
Mail Washer
http://www.mailwasher.net/
(Check e-mail at the server, delete email at the server, bounce e-mail *invalid e-mail address* at the server. You download the e-mail you want. Will stop virii from downloading thru e-mail when you delete the junk)
(The Pro will support more than one e-mail profile/address & has a few more options)

File Deletion
http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
(Because we all have had to cover our tracks at sometime)
*weapondrift*

I use East-Tec Eraser & Evidence Eliminator
(Paid Programs)
& now using Eraser again. I forgot about it till mentioned by weapondrift in another post.

Hope everyone finds this useful. If you have anything else to add to the list plz feel free. You might have something that someone could use.

Thanks for the list, sounds like there are a ton of good free programs out there to keep you protected.

For those of you who aren't fans of AVG, I would suggest trying out Avast! Antivirus (http://www.avast.com). The program is free, but does require a valid E-mail address to register. In the few years I have used the software they have never spammed me, and I think it works better then AVG.

Default I Forgot!

http://www.blackviper.com/

(This guy has been around for years. Dig around his site for a little bit & you will find a long list of the Service Configurations for your OS that you can safely disable, let the service start up or set it to manual)
Speeds up Windows XP, makes it safer ..remote registry starts up at boot? wtf?
Sorry I didn't get to this before now & hope everyone catches this.

Advanced Windows Care is also a great system clean up and speed up utility, one that I've been using for over a year.

I also was already using 4 things that's on Geeksters orignal post..

Comodo Firewall
AVG AntiVirus
AdAware 2007
CCleaner

I only had two...
AdAware and Spybot...
plus my good old friend McAfee.
Add MBK2's to the list...

Have you rebooted the PC after runnin spybot? Sometimes that's needed to finish the cleaning.

SpyBot may find things b/c it knows it's not suppose to be there but it can't clean the PC b/c the code isn't there. It is a very good program, but it doesn't keep up with all the "crap". I don't think any of them can keep up, really. That's why you need more than one spyware checker. Like anti-virus, they are re-active not pro-active. Try a different one or 2 & see how you do.
