I am also in the market for a new pc. The current one sounds like a fax modem when you turn it on. It used to have windows 98 on it until we wiped it and installed XP pro. I don't want Vista though.
My dad has had several Dells, all laptops, and I'm not sure that I would buy a Dell laptop. Can't speak to the desktops though.

I've been working on Dell laptops for more than 3 years, and haven't had a problem.

Both of the ones you've posted have advantages, but I'd lean more towards one that has a DVD burner in it. CD's are becoming obsolete. In that price range, you might want to check the Dell Small Business section. You'd be suprised at what you can find if you poke around the Dell website.

I use a dell laptop with vista on it. no problems.
