Exclamation HBO:Autism, The Musical

http://www.hbo.com/events/autism/

I have not seen this yet. I am hoping to watch it soon.

I think the title is kind of strange...being that we here live with autism everyday. My kids and I when we heard about this project imagined it would be something like a person with autism and their reflections on life via a musical....that is not the case lol...but is a thought. If you know anyone that has autism or know someone you know how amusing that would be.

I gues having two "typical" siblings who are much older. Easier for us to determin early on that Vincent was different. His brother pointed out an article in Newsweek regarding autism about 5 years ago...of course I did not want to think about it and I told him so, because in my mind there is no way that Vincent could be the kid wearing a helmet, rocking consistently, not talking, virtually in his own world, watching things spin and riding on the little bus. (no helmet, he does talk now, has never rocked, we have helped him out of his little world some, he does like to spin stuff but not for hours, but the little bus is actually pretty cool since most days on the way home he is the only kid on the bus LOL)

Any how, if you your self have a child, know of a child, etc...i dont know anyone that doesnt know of at least one person with autism. When I was a kid it was virtually non exsistent and the effects were generally more debilitating for the individual. I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out and how the people that had this idea worked with the children. Whether I agree with the methods or not...it will be enlightening.

just my like 3rd or 4th PSA for the day.

Hi, Cheri. I studied autism many years ago, working in both self contained special ed classes and public schools as a one-on one aide. My MS degree is in Elementary Education, but I taught in the private schools, where I worked with a mainly autistic population. Right now, my 6 year old neice has been diagnosed with PDD, which is on the autism spectrum. She has been getting extensive therapy since she was 6 months old, so thank God, she is doing well. She goes to regular public school, and academically, she is above grade level. Some days are better than others. She doesn't make eye contact, and will do the rocking until she is spoken to.

As for the HBO special, it looks very interesting, but I am too cheap to get HBO! (Actually, I work too many hours and have too many sitters watching shows that I feel are inappropriate for my kids...so, goodbye HBO and Showtime!) I am sure it will eventually be on A & E (like the Sopranos), or on video. Keep me updated Vincent! Let me know how the show is...it is a very interesting concept.

I am sure it will be out on DVD eventually, this special is about the making of "autism the musical" I have not checked to see if that is actually out yet. I know there were some viewings in the Bay Area if I am not mistaken last summer. I did not make it to any.\

One guilty pleasure is HBO, Vincent loves a few of the kids shows so it makes it hard to part with.

Nice to know other people around here know about these things.
My ex-husband used to rock, especially at night. Nobody would have ever thought him autistic but I have to wonder now if he was on the cusp of the autism.

I understand about the PDD we have a few kids affected by PDD in a group I belong to.
Vincent started his "therapy" at 1.5yrs. Only because we left the Dr. that wanted to keep waiting to DX him. So we moved on...things have changed dramatically. His teacher tells me he has so much potential and we see it as well. it is hard getting on the same page sometimes as the school district.

I will keep everyone informed that is usually one thing I am pretty good at LOL.
