they have creams for that :-p

anywho...

driving for long periods is something a person has to get used to. It's easier for some than others. Important part is to know your limits and when to pull over.

I think you are possibly right about getting used to the long drives. Coming from the UK any long journeys were done on a train or plane and therefore staying awake is not that important, unless your the pilot/driver! Many a time I fell asleep on the bus/train/plane without any consequences. Unless of course the couple of occasions where I was late for work because I missed my stop!

years back I had a hard time with long trips, now I knock out 7-800 miles a day and not be sleepy. Tired..heck yes, but not sleepy. It takes conditioning and common sense when to call it a day.
