i can tell you it was alot

we currently have 80 gig of data so it was somewhere around 400 a month!

i took geeksters advice and searched around the knowledge base for usb support and thought i found something
i just had to create a registry DWORD and i would be set

but when i went to find it the Key didnt even exist!
so i decided to contact CDW...they found a USB/Ethernet 500gb external HD that is compatable with server 2003
so im going to attempt that for now (crosses fingers)

here is the link

Another problem you might run into is....
How old is the PC you are going to be using for this external HD USB/Ethernet backup? If the PC is "old-ish" the BIOS (w/c is on the Motherboard) may not be able to support a 500 GIG USB (or Internal) Hard Drive. It's beyond it's capacity to even "see" the HD & if it does it can't "compute" the numbers to see the full HD, just part of it. M$ had to do a LOT of coding to extend it's basic 16/32 bit code to enable larger hard drives. Mobo makers had to do a lot of rework for the BIOS & bus lines to enable the larger HD's.

Plus, again: Go into your BIOS to make sure the USB is enabled. Or have you tried it with something else and it works?

I hope the one that CDW is sending works but just wanted to let you know that this could be a problem, also.

off topic:--Want me to start a new thread about me getting "fired". It"s very interesting, at least to me--Back on topic.

thanks for your help as usual Geekster!

its a dell server which isnt that old. i contacted them to get the new internals and they told me that the 500 was as high as it could go. so i know thats good. i didnt get in to the bios yet as its a bitch to have everyone stop working while i tinker with the server. i will attempt that as it will take a few days to get the drives here this way i know what to expect when they do arrive

and yes i think you should start that thread

i would think (hope) Dell offers BIOS updates, especially for the server models.

I'm a bit late, but I would just do it as mentioned above.
Have a "dummy" pc that will backup the data each night.
Use Cobian 8. Free backup software..Very reliable.......

here is dell's support link..
