yea yea the good old days...

this is what im ultimately trying to do
since we are installing new internals which are 500gb and combining a few drives i want to just have a 500gb to backup everything knowing that i dont have 500gb of info yet

but since we have so much info i cant use our tape drive anymore and they dont make a tape cartridge that large..soooo
we looked in to offsite data backup and that is SUPER EXPENSIVE!

so next best thing of course would be just plug in a drive hit a button and go home for the night...

would you have another idea to accomplish this? i even emailed the guys coming in to migrate our old drives to the new ones and they were puzzled why the USB ones wouldnt work...

that is odd/stupid thing for M$ to do

how often are you looking to backup? How do you have internal drives setup on server?

couple of options....*thinking outloud*
setup server for RAID 5
make backups to CD's
have server copy drive image to another dedicated pc

i would like to backup every night
my boss has this thing about taking the backup offsite

so we would have 2 drives and they would alternate days backing up
so i would take the previous night home and swap out in the am (yea a pain in the ass but whatever)

we already have a RAID1 connection but hes worried about a fire and loosing everything (we had one of those too years ago but nothing happened to our office)
thought about the PC too but that would be hard to take home with me

I don't think 2003 natively supported USB. (If my remember'er isn't broke)). do a search for 2003 USB support & I think u'll find some solutions. Plus!...chk ure system bios & make sure that USB is enabled.

considering you have the drives, why not use your laptop? essentaly maping the USB drives and having the server backup to them via your laptop

How much were you quoted for offsite storage? I use Idrive for a couple of our small servers. They actually fall under 2 gigs so its free for daily online backups, but their prices are really good for larger volume. For personal use its $49 a year for unlimited and for Business use its $500 for 500 gigs. Take a look at it http://www.idrive.com/pricing.htm
