Default any Windows domain experts here ?

we run a Windows 2000 Server with a domain here.. in order for users to logon quickly the LAN IP is set as their DNS, there's one issue however.. our internal domain name is the same as the web site address, so from inside the domain the users can not visit the companies web site. i was schooled in the Novell era and got this network as-is after many people worked on it, so i deal with what i have.

my issue... how do i setup/tell the server (Active Directory) that it goes to the external web site when user type in that address ?

TIA!

I remember when you first set them up with the DNS address. This is an interesting problem though. The internal Domain name shouldnt really matter though because in the DNS server box you put in the IP address (right?). So when they go to the web they type in www.yourcompany.com or whatever. Are they actually putting the www?

What exactly happens when they try to go to the company website?

Take a look at this post I found:

First, the TCP/IP properties of your DNS server's NIC card should point to itself for DNS resolution.
Second, under DNS, right-click on your DNS server and select "Properties". Click the "Forwarders" tab. Make sure "Enable forwarders" is checked. Make sure your ISPs DNS servers are listed as forwarders.
Third, under DNS -> Your_DNS_Server - > Forward Lookup Zones, I assume you have Companyname.com listed? Within that forward lookup zone, find the WWW entry. The IP address should be that of the server that is hosting your web site. If it is not, change it. If it is not there, add it.

thanks Matt, as i mentioned somebody else set this up and i got "inherited' it, when they try to go to the company web site (www.companyname.com) they just get page not found.. and i did not expect for it to stop at the server, it is however called the same but without the www...

i will see if i can find the settings in your last post on the server (as said, i am not that familiar with 2000 Server, getting better but still learning)

Try to ping your company's site, that should show you the IP address. What's the site, if your still on the network I'll try to get you the IP.
