I disagree with this, but only in relation to Treos. Palm has done *a lot* of work on their Palm OS & especially Windows Mobile devices to make them stellar, easy to use phones.

WM treos for instance, you can start typing the contact's name on the today screen and is searches for contacts, that's not available on other WM devices, but it does exist, as we know, on Smartphones.

The Q wins on Screen (brighter, wider, sharper), thinness and lack of antenna. Treo 700wx wins on sheer number of available applications (threaded SMS being a big one I miss), battery life and speed. If Palm, Verizon releases a WM6 Treo with 320x320 resolution and without an antenna (that part is guaranteed), i'll probably switch. Maybe. lol

While I can't say much about Q vs. Treo, I can say that my Sprint Q does the above stated functionality where from the home menu, I can start typing a name on the keypad and i'm automatically taken to the contacts area w/ the user(s) that meet my search criteria are shown.

What's more, you actually have a dialpad available on the Treo should you ever need one to dial 1-800-FLOWERS, and the touchscreen facilitates typing that out. I don't think it's at all fair to say the Q is better as a phone.

Also something you can do with a up-to-date sprint Q .... but it looks kind strange, however you can get use to it.

yep, it's also available (via hack) on my Verizon Q. Too bad we must resort to that for something so basic.

I think it's perfectly fair... thats why one is called PocketPC and one is called a SmartPhone. The "phone" design typically comes first, with the PDA functionality a great add-on. We can argue semantics, and yes, there is a wealth of software available, but the intial requriment stated in this thread "I want a phone first and a PDA second" and that is exactly what the Q is - on top of a Treo. There are some functions that the Treo's touch-screen does give it that gives it an edge here-or there "phone" wise, but I have yet to meet someone that can proficiently one-hand dial their treo while driving using the dial-pad that comes on screen.

Many Treo owners at one time or another have wanted to chuck their phone out of the window (I'm sure that's true for the Q as well... but I have never personally met a happy Treo user nor someone that LIKES me recommend a Treo).

In the end, it's to each their own, but it's hard to argue that PocketPC or Palm-based PDA-phones "out-phone" a Smartphone. That'd be like saying your BT-headset + Skype out-phone's a 900MHz cordless.

I know you've spoken in the past about 700w users, I hope you mean 700wx, it's a much better phone. I know, because I've actually owned one. And the phone features are 100% one-handed. But what do I know.

I went back to alltel today to exchange the treo for the Q but they were all out. I had them order me one before I left the store. I am getting obsessive I think! I know the salesman is probably getting tired of seeing me!;) Typing on my treo 700wx now.
