Default Store email/contacts on miniSD?

I would like to store all of my boss' email on his Motorola Q's miniSD card.

He has 256 MB of miniSD flash memory, which I'm sure he will fill up in a month or so. We're talking a guy that has over 1,000 contacts and needs them all.

I installed a miniSD card, but couldn't find instructions to set it as the primary storage device for email.

He syncs with the Exchange server directly (no ActiveSync) and also uses it to download all of his Gmail.

I moved his photos to the miniSD card, but that only freed up about 7MB so I still get the "your phone is running low on free storage space."

Any tips on using the miniSD card as the primary memory?

go to the hacks section of the forum it will tell you how to put the email on the SD card...
you can also install any program on the SD card and to save room clear out the temporary internet files...but if your going to put programs and emails on the SD card your going to want to get a bigger one that 256 (you dont need to but never hurts to have extra space)...you can get a 2 gig really cheap...

See this hack post for a link on how to store E-mail on a memory card. There's also a hack there to store your browser cache on a memory card, which can save a lot of memory if you browse the Web much.

You can't store contacts on a memory card, though. They have to be on the device.

I have a question thats kind of in relation to this. I just set up my phone with outlook. Is there a way that I can transfer all of my contacts to my PC so that if I need to do a master reset I can just add them right into the phone again?

Another random question: How do you get google maps on your phone, and is it free to use if you dont have data service?

How do you use the calendar function so that it will just sync with your computer?

Thanks for all the help!

if you use outlook and put all contacts AND calendar information into outlook then sync the phone with the computer all the information will transfer to the Q. windowsmobile.com to download active sync or if you have vista use mobile device center and that can be found in the same website

www.google.com/gmm - for google maps...just go to this link on the phone..
yes it uses data to grab the maps from...so if you dont have a data plan then dont download it

I'll check out the hacks and what the pros and cons are, I just thought I was missing the obvious option somewhere that said "default to miniSD".

Is it just me, or should this be a feature of every SD capable phone? am I the only one that doesn't use my phone as a media device?

Here's what I found in that post that looked interesting:
  1. Create a folder called "MAPI" on the Storage Card
  2. make a folder inside that called "Attachments"
  3. Move everything from \windows\messaging to \Storage Card\MAPI
  4. Fire up a registry editor for the smartphone and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MAPI
  5. Change AttachPath to "\Storage Card\MAPI\Attachments"
  6. Change PropertyPath to "\Storage Card\MAPI"
  7. Reboot your phone
According to the blog I got these instructions from you should see all of your existing mail in the inbox, which is really being read off of the storage card, and all new mail will go to the storage card.

According to Item 3 on the FlexMail 2007 FAQ (for a different product that supposedly accomplishes a similar task), it may also help to modify the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\PNPUnload Delay key in the registry to 4096 (4 seconds) so the phone waits a while for the card to become readable before giving up on it.

Are there any dangers to moving to the storage card using these steps? am I running a risk of messing things up and loosing email?

Will contacts still reside on the phone memory, or do I risk him loosing his contacts?

We never sync this with a PC, only with the server, will the fix still work, and will we delete things on the server if it syncs and doesn't find the emails where it thinks they should be?

(I'm just a little over protective of my boss' phone, since I need him to sign all my purchase orders, not to mention my performance reviews!)

Oh, and THANKS! that thread helped out a TON!

I wound up having to create the registry keys from scratch, they did not already exist...

But it looks like it is working.

I can't tell if his gmail (pop3) email is being stored on the card yet, but I'm sure time will tell rather quickly.

The awesome thing is, if he runs out of disk space, I just need to pop out the miniSD card, migrate the data to a larger miniSD, and I'm good, I don't have to re-do anything.

Thanks to everyone for the tips!
