Default Screen Brightness Time Out

I am desperate to find a solution to the fact that the stupid engineers who built this thing didn't give you the capability to adjust the screen brightness. Any software hacks reading this, it would be worth $$$ to me if I could change the brightness to match the setting and save battery life!

In the meantime, it would be nice if I could just change the time out to 0 seconds so that it would at least stay dim when viewing in dark conditions. The current setting only allows you to set it down to 5 seconds minimum. Which means it is bright for 5 seconds then dims until you scroll down to the next page where upon it turns bright again. Very annoying.

Please help. It there a registry hack that will fix this?
