Default Multitasking Issue

Multitasking is good, right up until your phone grinds to a halt because you are unwittingly attempting to run ten programs in the background.
This is the one aspect of the Q which is delaying my purchase decision. I am in field sales and out of the office regularly and make extensive use of the PDA portion of my phone (currently a Treo 600). As I've read the various threads on this forum, it does appear this is one of the achilles heels to the Q relative to the Treo 700p or the BB 8703.

If I make regular use of my calendar, email and web browser, how often am I going to run into this "multiple app" issue where it either slows or brings the Q to a halt?

I have to say that the annoyance of doing a Kill All is no greater than the inconvenience of having to exit and launch apps in the Palm OS from scratch every time you use them.

I could live with that, however, in other threads there have been "suggestions" that the Kill All command doesn't necessarily "kill all."

If there is a process running the command may NOT kill everything BUT it will kill all the extraniously running programs, which is fine. My Q is fine with two or three apps running, it gets bogged down when I find six to eight apps trying to run at once.

FYI, I went through a 2 month process of evaluating Treo vs. Q. For my business, I decided that the black Q worked the best for me. In short, I determined that I would use the Q mostly as a phone, but would use the calendar/contacts as well. Would use email and web surfing as needed.

For Excel and Word documents, I do not wish to work on those on anything less than my laptop.

All in all, I view the Q as part of a one-two punch (phone + laptop) for business travel.

So far, I am enjoying my Q.

Regards.

Do you have unlimited data? And if so, are you using PDAnet? For some reason I put off investing in PDAnet for YEARS (first with my Treo, then for several months with my Q), wasting a few hundred dollars on hotel hookup charges. Then I got wise. Especially with the EVDO connection, the combination of Q+Laptop is a good one.

Marvelous Merv: Yes, I have the $44.95 "unlimited" data plan. I do not use PDANet.

For about a week I tried the $15 broadband access/tethering feature. It worked ok on my laptop with the VZAccess Manager. In my 1X area where I live, I get about 100 kpbs tethering, which is about the same as I get on the Q for web surfing. I have not tried tethering in an EVDO area. (In El Paso, my Q was getting about 400 kbps...)

Like you, I have paid more than a few dollars for airport/hotel/coffee shop wifi connections in the past. As I see things the Q+laptop will work better for me than laptop+aircard+non-pda phone.

Regards.

It takes 5 seconds to go into the task manager and kill all apps.

Big Freakin Deal.

I think you have been mis-guided. Multitasking is the single largest asset of the wm OS. How can checking email while browsing the web or revewing notes be a bad thing.

I think that most people complaining put a RAM meter on their home page and when it gets below a certain point think that they are getting l;ow, even if their are no side effects.

To answer your question, if you run calender, web and email all the time you will almost never have a problem. Especially if you power off your device every night for charging.

Pony up for PDAnet. I get 120kbps when I am in 1x with my Q, and about 650kbps when I am on EVDO. It has really changed the way I use my laptop (which is a tablet). I routinely tether now to make use of the broadband connection in meetings and while I am on the road.
