Rating or review q or samsung?

Ive narrowed my choices to either the Q phone, or the Samsung schi-730. Both use the same OS, the Q looks great, has a smaller screen, a camera, but no touch screen which may be difficult for me to get used to (Im a long time Palm pda user).

Ill mainly use the phone and pda functionality and am looking for stability and ease of use.

What are the main features that I should be comparing? Has anybody used both phones, so that they could recommend 1 over the other?

Thanks.

These two devices do not use the same OS. The Q uses the Smartphone OS and the i730 uses the PPC Phone Edition OS. These are quite different. The touch screen, or lack of, is the most obvious.

Personally, I think the Q is "easier" to use for someone coming from a phone. If you don't need WiFi and can do without editing MS Office documents, the Q is a great choice.

There are many threads on this subject, so have a search or two--you'll find what you need.

Thanks for the info. How easy or hard is it to enter an appointment on the Q phone without the touch screen. (on my pda I touch a few buttons on the screen, write in my appt, and Im done).

How easy or hard is it to dial each of these phones, for example can it be done with 1 hand? The buttons look small.

Im leaning towards the Q phone, but I am used to using a touch screen/styles on my pda to enter my appts and tasks. Do you think it is easy to get used to using a keypad to do this?

I guess my main concern is that Ill have a device that does PDA/pim stuff, and phone calls, but neither as well as the 2 seperate devices that I use now. It would be nice to only carry 1 device around with me.

thanks

Of course, these are very subjective questions, but I'll respond anyway.
I prefer not using a stylus, so I'm partial to the Smartphone OS. Is entering stuff easy? Yes, but not as easy as on a full size PC keyboard. ;)
Both devices do have small buttons. However, I think the Q is easier to dial with because the i730 is very awkward to use one-handed with the keybard out--its get top heavy and sometimes difficult to hold with one hand. The screen touch pad is ok for dialing, but you might have to stretch your thumb out depending on how big or small your hands are.
Since the Q has a full keyboard, it's not much different than typing on the i730's keyboard.
The i730 is clerly a more powerful device, but if you can do without the WiFi and the ability to edit MS Office documents, the Q should be fine. It's hard to beat the size and weight of the Q.
Overall, the Q is almost as good as the i730 for PIM use. However, the Q is much better than the i730 as a phone. Thi is generally the case when comapting a Smartphone with a PPC Phone.

Default Why I went with the Q

I looked and looked for months.

It was down to the treo 700 P/W, 6700, or the Q...

I went with the Q for a variety of reasons. (I used a palm device for many years and got used to the touch screen too.)

1. The phone is excellent. I think the voice recongnition through the head set is an excellent feature. I do not believe the other phones have this feature. IMHO this is the best cell phone I ever owned (clarity) in the past 6 years or so...

2. The size is excellent... even with a good case it fits in your front pocket without adding too much bulk.

3. A good selection of software to customize your phone (and growing)... I added fascade, papyrus, QCaps, Yahoo mail for smartphone and Qtask and a few others...

The above additions made the phone an excellent PDA and email device for my yahoo account. Out of the box after rebates the Q is $99... add the software and you have another $60 or so... I sync the contacts, calendar, and task to my outlook account. (I cannot sync to my outlook mail due to our exchange server being bberry friendly only... )

Do I miss the touch screen? Yes, at times... I want to copy and paste using a touch screen... but as time goes on... no big deal...

IMHO it is an excellent phone and PDA... It is great to do text msgs and email using a reg. keyboard... rather than the phone pad...

Are there things I would like added? sure... but maybe more software will be out... like threaded SMS that integrates with the Q SMS...

Keep in mind too that copy and paste can be freely added to the Q and it works quite well.

Excel can also be edited natively on the Q with ptab. There are wordpad apps for text editing but only viewers for doc pdf ppt etc.

I prefer the ruggedness of no touch screen and dumped my ipaq long ago. I had a Samsung i600 smartphone too and loved it. A very rugged phone. The Q just has more features.

I prefer EVDO/1X over wifi. It's everywhere.

My sentiments exactly! In fact, I still have two i600s. I keep them "just in case."
