Prepending 1 for Long Distance

I find it very frustrating that I can't easily prepend a 1 to my contact phone numbers when I'm calling from outside the area. Has anyone found an easy way to do this?

start/ settings/ call options and set the area code/ and country number to 1 and area code to whatever area U are in and it will automatically put them in if U only put in a 7 digit number

So the question is, how does the Q determine when to add the 1 and when note too. In most major metropolitan areas you may have multiple area codes which are not long distance, and in some cases, the same area code is long distance for some phone numbers but not others.

I do have those fields populated though. So maybe I'm overlooking something simple?

Just curious, what carrier are you on? I have never had to dial a 1 for any call on Verizon Wireless for the past 10 years.

Yes--me too, on Sprint. Just area code and number...originally (before Q-enlightenment) THAT is what I thought smartphone meant!
