I also find I get way better quality on the 640 x setting instead of the 1280. It makes a big difference.

wow, that seems strange to me, unless the 1280 is interpolated. Which would mean the 1.3 spec isn't a true 1.3 (I haven't checked).

Yes, it does seem strange, but try it and you'll see it works for you also..... so i guess the 1280 is interpolated.
