Plugging Q into my laptop disconnects my wireless connection

help.
whenever i plug my Q into my laptop (via USB port), my laptop tries to use my motorola Q to connect to the internet and in the process it disconnects my wireless connection that i already have established. in short, for some reason my laptop assumes that my USB connection is the 'preferred' way that i want to connect to the internet. i do not use my Q to connect my laptop to the internet.
how do i tell the laptop to NOT override my wireless connection by trying to use my Q (connected to my USB port) to connect to the internet?
