Default Outlook, ActiveSync & Contacts

I have a relatively (2 months) new Q, and am currently running the store bought software package. I have had to hit the "Master Reset" button once in order to rectify what I thought was sluggish and choppy performance (frequent crashes, lockups, and erratic behavior).
On my home PC, I run MS Outlook 2000, and neither Activsync nor my Q currently syncs my phone or email contacts. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I am assuming that the Q is not backwards compatable with Outlook 2000; or that the current software package that came with the phone is buggy. I want to upgrade, but not until I have backed up my contacts, due to my master reset issue. Loads of fun.
I have reviewed the forum, but nothing seems to point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance!

I run Office 2000 with no problems.

Uninstall and reinstall Active Sync and see what happens.

Another option is to backup to wireless sync... saves everything about contacts except picturs and linked ringtones...

My "Backup" line is not darkened ---it is grayed out---so that I can't click to backup. Any suggestions?
