Default Newbe Phone lock question

The Manual that came with the phone can be oddly vaque at times.
Of course, it's just a phone... So how difficult can it be.

Here is my question (because I'm not going to just try it and end up screwed)...

When you lock the phone, does it ask you at that time for an unlock password -or- is there somewhere else that to enter a password for locking your phone?

The book doesn't say and I would really hate to lock the phone only to find that it wants some password that I know nothing about.

Any help would be appreciated.

the 'keylock' does not as for a password you just press the left softkey and then the * key
the 'device lock' requires a password
but when you set up the lock you set the password

I was afraid that if I just tried it, I'd get locked out.
