If you do a master reset, all third party software that the Seller put on for you will be gone. If he put Docs to Go, it will be gone unless you have a Qpro that comes with it from Verizon. Do you have a serial number for Docs-to-Go?

A master reset will not matter as far as activation. Verizon uses the ESN and that is a permanent part of the phone. If you can, I'd say master reset it because who knows what the previous owner did to it; some good, some bad.

Ebay Sellers often sell phones used and then report them stolen. Sometimes the phones are stolen and have been reported as such then resold on Ebay by the thief. Verizon then blocks the phone and you have bought a brick. Caveat Emptor.

Thank you.
supposedly they are the same, but i found out i was able to find keys in the registry with Resco that PHM Regedit didn't find.

keep in mind, Resco is not free.. PHM is.

I would install activesync, succesfuly connect to it, then go to the motorola website and download the software update tool, run it for the latest updates, then activcate the phone, that way everything is back to the original setup and updated before you make changes

I haven't seen this answered (maybe it was, but I missed it), but Master Resetting goes back to the latest firmware installed. And yes, the Motorola Updater updates the FIRMWARE (which in turn updates components of Windows Mobile 5). If you apply MOL3 and do a master reset, you will still be at MOL3 even if you bought your phone back in May of 2006.

My personal recommendation is to do a Master Reset, activate the phone on VZW's network (make sure you either add a data plan or put a data-block on your line -- a la carte data access is stupid-expensive), and make sure you do it before your window of opportunity to lodge a complain on eBay runs out in case there is a problem with the phone.

Lots of good points but to clarify, MOL 3 actually doesn't change anything in WM5 beyond what MOL2 did. MOL3 changed Moto radio firmware and is the same version of WM5.

A la carte data when used properly is a great thing. I've had Minutes-Only-Usage data, pay-per-kb, the 10MB plan and Unlimited. All served their purposes. In fact several WM2003 phones we have are still running pay-per-kb and that works great for basically non data users who just need to update their phone occasionally, like the timezone update.

However, without the "proper" registry hacks, little apps in the background of WM5 Smartphone seem to relentlessly hook up to the internet. It only adds up to a MB or so per month (basicallly nothing), but that turns into $20/month in data charges for the phone being on.

Ouch.
