Default Moto Q vs Treo 700p??

Dear Q users,

Apologies for this perhaps annoying and predictable question. I am buying my first ever smartphone/PDA, I have settled with Sprint and need to decide between the Q and the Treo 700p. I understand the basic differences, such as Windows vs Palm, stylus on the treo etc.
Any advice for a newby? From the shear amount of posts in these forums it seems that the Q often has issues, or that it takes some trickery to get certain features working properly. My impression with the Treo 700p is that it pretty much works out the box and doesn't have many bugs.
That said, I don't think I will like the stylus/touchscreen operation, and the Q is pocket size, and looks awesome.
Advice?

seems like you know the basics, so it pretty much up to personal preference...some people who have it love it and wouldnt trade it in and others just cant stand it...if i were you i would read the other posts about treo vs. Q and maybe give them both a test drive to see what you like better...
it is true that the Q does have some problems but usually nothing major....the Q is kinda like a PC...where if you want it to do certain things you have to add and modify it just like your desktop...customize it to your liking and not just what the company tells you to use...the 1 downside for me is that it didnt come with MS Office suite built in, but i got documents to go and now i can edit office files....

i love my Q and wouldnt go to anything else....

n99hockey:

Thanks for your reply. I kinda like the idea of playing around with the Q alot to get it customized. I'm a bit of a geek with respects to my laptop, don't see why I shouldn't cope with the Q! Editing documents would be important for me, I'm a scientist by trade, and understood that documentstogo would work on the Q. Any experience with gmail or google calender on the Q? I could download mail and use a 3rd party calender/organizer but I love the google suite of stuff on the web.

I found the stylus/touchscreen to be kind of an issue of wear and tear on the screen. Good call, go for the Q

I use Gmail among others on my Q as a pop3 account with no issues at all
I've never used Gcalender so I can't speak about that one.

I can tell you I use Outlook and it syncs with my mail, contacts, and schedule perfectly every time either via USB or BT.

I've had mine for about a month now and I'm very pleased with it, I like you am a bit geeky and just view the learning / modification experience of it as a sort of entertainment. I'm still in the "wow it does that too! / I can make it do that?!" stage. It didn't take long to read thru these forums and get it tweaked to my liking.

You can use Goosync with either device to synchronize with Google Calendar, and both have built-in email clients that work with GMail.

700P is easier to use. You will have to work a bit to get the Q to your liking, however,

*) MP3s skip every few seconds on the 700p. If you want to use it to listen to music, it's a deal breaker.
*) Bluetooth stack is terrible on the 700p. Just don't do it.
*) Verizon 700P has SMS issues where it freezes up after sending for a few minutes. Not an issue with Sprint model.
*) The Web browser on the 700p, Blazer, is terrible.

On the other hand, Q
*) Battery life on the Q is not great (though if you don't come from monster devices like Treos you may be used to that already)
*) Fewer apps
*) Harder to get used to (no button for calendar, for instance), no quick way to safely turn off screen instead of locking (which requires 2 key presses), no threaded SMS, I could go on...

I would not recommend the 700p at this point. But in late May a firmware update will arrive that may address its weaknesses. However, the Treo 755p will be released in a few weeks, so why even bother.

I agree with g-funk. If you haven't picked one as of yet, I'd wait till this coming week when the 755p is supposed to be released. It is pretty much the 700p in a 680 body with all the fixes that are supposed to be coming to the 700p. I'm starting to entertain the Q and do have one along with my 700p, but I'm still not close to being sold. The 700p does have the problems mentioned, and I get them all unfortunately. With my arguing with corporate sales, I'm pushing to get it replaced with a Q, but i'd entertain the 755 since the rom fixes the 700p's issues. I just can't wait and wait for the 700p to get fixed. I'm a big fan of the touch screen. Wear and tear on the screen is a worthless comment as you can spend a few dollars for screen protectors. My screen is still pristine after a year, and I think it makes editing much easier. You also get more 3rd party software support with programs that go back more than 5yrs(but still good and worthwhile) that will still work on it.

It's definitely far from a cut and dry pick. My one big issue still lies in the fact that it's a Microsoft product, and I don't want to use them any more than I have to. I've avoided Outlook up until now. Part of me wants to continue doing so.

As for calendar and contacts apps, I'm a big fan of Agendus, and they did just come out with a smartphone edition. So I know I'm covered if I migrate to the Q.

The Treo's are huge compared to the Q. Thats not a good thing. The Q is much slimmer and you don't have a bulg in your pants when pocketing the phone

I had an i500 before my 700p and never wanted the 700p. Wasn't happy with the larger phone. Not happy with the size of the Q either as I prefer a flip phone. But oddly enough, the size difference between the Treo and the Q was not the major selling point. It's still a big rectangle hanging from my belt. The only time the phone goes in a pocket is if I'm wearing cargo pants or shorts. And I have a bulge in my pants regardless if my phone is in a pocket or not

It's actually a Treo 700p in a Treo 750 body. The build quality of the Treo 750 is superior to the Treo 680. The Treo 755p also incorporates the long awaited maintenance release (that still hasn't shown up for the Treo 700p).

Not so much with the Treo 755p. The new line of Treos are definitely not as slim as the Q, but they also aren't as wide as the Q. I find a big difference between the Treo 700p to both the Q and the newer form factor of the 750/755p.

In the end, it's personal preference. Which phone offers the features that are most important to you. Price is also a factor. The new Treo is priced at $279 and the Q is $99.

Good luck with your decision.
