Has anyone done this before and how smooth does it run?

yes
i have all 50+ apps on my SD card
and they run just fine

Yep - run most apps, including the SprintTV, Notepad Mobile, Docs to Go, all run just fine...

any chance that I can move the installed apps into the memory card instead of reinstall it?

download the .cab from my apps site, it's called MobileAppMover.CAB..
