Default How to really close programs on the Q black?

I just got the Moto Q black for Verizon yesterday and I have been playing with it, nice phone. But my question is, how do I close programs without going into the task manager and killing them? Like when I hit the Red power button to go back to the home page for instance the application I was in remains open in the background, then after a while so many applications are open that my phone becomes slowed down to a halt. So I want the application to actually close when I switch back to my home page or go elsewhere, is this possible?

thanks!

QTask or XBar3 should do the trick.

I started out with the xbar but ended up with Qtask. Qtask is highly configurable (but the default settings seem to make the most sense): a quick double tap on the "x" key closes the open application.

I started out with XBar as well, but once I started using QCaps, there were some compatibility issues, so I switched to QTask.

I thought the default QTask actions were ok in the beginning for the most part.. except I wound up swapping the "action" button and "X" buttons around because I always want to kill the apps and the "X" button wasn't as accessible.

Or, simply, and for free, go to Start-System Tools and cursur over to task manager. Using the right soft key, Menu, Select Add Speed Dial. I set mine to "8" or "X". Now when ever I'm on the home screen, I just press and hold 8 and it opens task manager, then Menu-Kill All.
