Default GPS Software for Moto Q?

I am wanting to have the GPS functionality with my Moto Q. I just bought it a few weeks ago through At&t Wireless and is states on their website "Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone with integrated GPS" . They have a service you can purchase through them to pay by the month for unlimited routes, or you can pay by each use. My understanding is that since I have built in GPS, I should be able to get software that will let me use the GPS functionality of my moto Q whenever and how often I want without incurring any charges. Is anyone familiar with this? If so, any software recommendations?

Search for Windows Live Search or Google Maps Mobile

Yup. I just got Google maps working today, and it works great up here on my Q9h with no tweaks or hacks. Although, I'm a bit slow, and it took me a while to realize that I had to check the little menu box that sez "Use GPS". Doh!

It appears that others have also been using Windows Live, which is also apparently free, but I've been happy so far with Google Maps and haven't tried this yet.

I have been reading a lot of other forums after posting my question. Did you the GPS portion of it to work without a bluetooth GPS seperate unit? Just with the standard phone itself?

I think mine is a Q9H global. Its from At&T Wireless & I just got it a couple of weeks ago.

From what I have read, you MUST have a seperate external bluetooth GPS adapter to get the google maps, etc.. software to use the GPS funtionality.

Brad,

Yes, that's exactly what I have - the Q9H Global, with AT&T service. I don't even own a bluetooth GPS receiver. All I did was to download, install, and run the Google software (from www.google.com/gmm ). In fact, I had it working before I even figured out how to use any of the bluetooth features.

It did take several minutes, standing outside in the clear, for it to pick up the satellites. Mine doesn't seem sensitive enough to get any satellites while I'm indoors. In the car, it seems to *hold* satellites fine while holding it in normally, seated in the front seat- but to initially acquire the satellites I usually have to set it on the dash for a few minutes.

I just now thought about it, but since it needs to download data nearly real-time to work, I wonder if it might be limited to only certain kinds of data plans. I'm using one of the pda connect data plans.

All that being said, I'm impressed with how it works for occasional location finding and directions. I think if I was going to use it on an everyday basis, I'd probably spring for a bluetooth GPS adapter anyway, which is probably more sensitive, and to avoid worrying about moving the Q around and losing all the satellites.

Good luck, it's kinda cool to see a satellite photo of your exact location when you get it working...

Hey, thanks a bunch for your help. I downloaded both google maps and Windows Live Search to my motoQ. I figured out that when I was testing it in the car, it must have not been getting a good satellite signal. I held it up to the window from inside the house today and it works like a charm! I was so excited to get to play with it and check it out. I really like the Windows Live Search program too with all the points of interest to look up. I am trying to find a free voice guidance program that will work with the moto Q. So far, I have found two free ones with voice guidance, but havent gotten either to work with the Q9 Global with the internal GPS. They are looking for a external bluetooth GPS or something on the COM ports. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to access the GPS settings of the phone. So far I have not found any way to do so.

Check out this thread on another forum for info on how to set your gps to com 3. http://www.modaco.com/content/Smartp...ATED-updated-/

Works great. I just came back from a trip to unfamiliar parts and used google, windows live and the tele nav paid service (mine's still on a free trial).

Windows live was the one I used most often.

Anyhow, check out the com 3 fix.

What are the free voice programs you mentioned?

Not to naysay but thats incorrect. I also have the Q9h and the internal GPS works fine for Google Maps as long as you have a clear view of the sky of thin walls for the GPS signal.

Also be aware that GPS sync is not instant. It take a minimum of three satellites to triangulate you before you have a fixed position. Rainy days and very cloudy days can also slow down the process

-used to work satellites before i got into IT.

If you have a Q without the built in gps you can use Navizon for a general gps fix. Sometimes it's pretty accurate. Other times it's off by miles.

The voice guided free programs I installed but couldnt use because of the internal GPS receiver built into the phone were smart2go and Nav4All (which seems like a great one if it would work). Nav4All has tons of options and settings in it.
