Default Error: problem on the desktop

"ActiveSync encountered a problem on the desktop." That's the error I get now when I sync my MotoQ, the first model. I am syncing with my Windows Vista Laptop. Any clues as to what might be causing this? Does it literally mean my laptop desktop? (I closed my little sticky notes program and still got the error.) I only recently downloaded the sync software from the Motorola website since I knew the software that came with my phone was probably too out-dated, so that shouldn't be the problem.

A quick scan of my calendar, contacts, etc. (Outlook 2003) doesn't reveal anything missing but I hate to get out and need some information later that didn't sync. (Besides, I don't know which direction this error is in: laptop to phone or phone to laptop?) I did sync my MotoQ to this laptop a couple of times at first with no errors.

I'm afraid I'm just a novice when it comes to this MotoQ. I mainly got it instead of having a cell phone, PDA and MP3 player.

Thanks in advance,
Lisa in The Lowcountry

Activesync does not work with Vista. You need to download Mobile Device Center.

I'm assuming that you have synced with Vista before and that you're not syncing with any other notebooks/desktops. I'm also assuming that previous to this error there were no errors.

When you say error do you mean an error in syncing or an error in the application? These would be two different scenarios. An error in syncing would be what you're concerned about - where data is not completely synced between the two devices; while an error in the application would mean that Mobile Device Center had an issue starting up or connecting to the device (which I guess would also result in an incomplete sync between the two devices).

If you can tell me the error code or any more specifics I can maybe help you out. Maybe a screenshot?

Lexicon,

I get an incomplete sync and the reason is the error message about desktop. I am using Mobile Device Center.
What's the best way to provide a screen shot? It'd be the easiest way...

Dr Q:

I am using Mobile Device Center. It refers to the act of syncing as "ActiveSync." I specifically downloaded the program from Motorola for my Q and Windows Vista.

have you tried deleting the partnership and starting again. that is the sure fire fix to any problem.

Sorry. I still have either XP or Linux on all mt PC's so can't help a lot with Vista. Lexicon's advise might help. Otherwise I'm sure someone will help solve the problem.

I've just encountered the same problem on Windows Vista sync center - when I try and get a description of the error - that is all it gives. It used to work fine.

HMMM -

I tried deleting the partnership, that didn't work ...

guess I'll keep searching ....

a reinstall of Window mobile device center worked for me in the past, a restart of the pc may also help.

In an unrelated task (trying to get music file directly to my MotoQ's memory card via USB connection--not syncing) I think I fixed my problem or at least it hasn't happened since. I'm clueless as to why it fixed my sync problem...

I got this from http://motorola-global-eng.custhelp.com

How can I transfer multimedia files (music, photos, videos) between my phone's removable memory card and a computer?

You can access your phone's memory card with a PC and move / copy compatible files to it, or from it.
There are two steps to this process:
Setting up the Phone, and connecting and transferring between the computer.
Note: When your phone is connected to a computer, you can access the memory card only through the computer.
To set up on your phone:
  • Press the Center Select Key
  • Use the Navigation Key to scroll to Settings, and Press the Center Select Key
  • Use the Navigation Key to scroll to Connection, and Press the Center Select Key
  • Use the Navigation Key to scroll to USB Settings, and Press the Center Select Key
  • Use the Navigation Key to scroll to Default Connection, and Press the Center Select Key
  • Use the Navigation Key to scroll to Memory Card, and Press the Center Select Key
Once you have completed the above steps attach the Motorola Original USB cable to the accessory port on your phone and to an available USB port on your computer.
Then on your computer:
Find where your phone's memory card displays as a "Removable Disk " icon On a PC this is the "My Computer" window
On a Mac it's on the desktop

Double-click the "Removable Disk" icon to access the files on your phone's memory card
To store the desired files onto the memory card, drag and drop them as follows: MP3 files: mobile/audio
Screen savers: mobile/picture
Wallpapers: mobile/picture
Video clips: mobile/vide
