Disable Data - Motorola Q Forum

I have a Verizon Q (original) and I'm off to Mexico next week and I wanted to bring my phone.

But, I'm very worried I'm going to ring up some serious data charges even if I don't actively go online.

I do use many programs that go online daily. But, I only think my weather program checks automatically and I can disable that, I think.

Is that something I should be concerned with?

Is there any way that I can disable data, but still use it for phone calls?

If I turn off phone in the wireless manager, am I 100% safe? Obviously, I can't use it as a phone when it's set that way, so that's not really optimal.

Interesting, have people confirmed this works?

It's a work phone and I really don't want to surprise them with a $500 bill.

Also, when do you select a password? The first time you try to go online?

How quickly can they turn it off? And then back on when I return?

I'm not sure they'll do that for me as an employee, but I'm sure I can dig up the tax ID number, if that's all I need to provide.

Still curious if anyone with a Q has tried the password block and if that really works.

I did try it on a Pantech PN-820 Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone that I got for my wife from Verizon, and it did come up with the passward prompt to block access... however, the phone was a POS and I returned it, so I didn't get a chance to monitor it. Changed her phone to a standard cellphone.

Only other option is to call Verizon and ask that they block data while on your trip.

Also, I'm a little confused about the hack.

The first step, I see the broadband and express keys.

In the 2nd and 3rd step, which keys do I modify, there are many, none of which apear to be referenced here.

With just doing the first step, I do see that, the first time, it asked me for a username and password, then after that, it pops up when I check my email. I can check again right away and it doesn't ask me again, but after a "little bit" it does ask again, so I guess that would suffice, assuming nothing in the background can get through this and that I don't need the last 2 steps.

Adding Password Protection Before Using Data Connection

If you want to be prompted for a password when you access the Internet, do the following:
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\ConnMgr\Providers(7C4B7A38-5FF7-4BC1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA)Connections
Inside the broadband and express keys, change requirepw from 0 to 1.
Perform the same action in the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\ConnMgr\Providers(EF0974C-4C98FF6-AEF805DC0E8E)VZW BROWSER
Perform the same action in the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MOTOROLA\MMS\PROFILES\ VZW MMS
When you attempt to make a data connection, you should be prompted for a password.

Try the site below. I believe you have to create a user name, etc. Well worth the time. It works on my Q9H. Select "MoDaCo_NoData.CAB"

just call customer service they can turn on the data block immedietly just ask them.. and when ever you want you can call and ask to remove the data block trust me it works many verizon users have used this .. im sure a few might chime in and tell u that it works

It seems to indicate that this application is just for GPRS phones, I tried it on my Verizon Q and it does appear to work (but, only after a reboot). When activated, it appears to totally block the internet.

This seems to be a pretty good solution.

Anyone else tried it with a CDMA phone though?
