Default Cracked my screen 48 hours after activation. I rule.

Hmm. Oops.

Let me lay it out for you so you can get a full understanding of my stupidity here. I have a blackberry 8703, the exchange sync is unimpressive at best, so I grabbed a silver q off ebay. I activated it 2 days ago. This morning as I get out of my car to stroll into work, I forgot the fact that I had plugged it in to the car charger while it was still clipped to my belt. I got out, closed the door, and the coiled car adapter stretched out as I walked away. In the next tragic moment the q proceeded to jump out of the case and slingshot into my car door (which had the cable closed in it), and then launched the phone, battery, and battery cover in 3 different directions.

In the aftermath I discovered the screen had spiderwebbed. The phone still powers on and sends and receives calls, but the display lights up a solid white.

So.

First off, should I bother fixing this or just go for a new one?

Second, if it is worth fixing, is this something I can do myself? There's a guy on ebay that fixes screens for 100 bucks or so, but I found parts on cnn.cn for much cheaper. Should I attempt it myself for 50 bucks or just pay this guy 100?

Thanks.

Oh yeah. I'm new. I'm enjoying the site thus far.

first off, congratz to having set the standard for how to break the screen with great style :}

secondly... i think there was tutorial on Qusers.com on how to replace the screen, but wouldn't you still have the white light up of the screen ?

Yeah I saw that. The cracked lense I can swap out for 5 bucks, no big deal. I just found the walk-thru on disassembling the device as well, so I'm not worried about that either.

I guess the real question is, is the solid white screen a symptom of a damaged LCD, or did break more than just that? I'd rather not toss a $40 screen in it for nothing.

Any takers?

so you can only see white on the screen?
sounds like you might have damaged more than just the screen

Perfect.

Well, I'll tear it apart tonight & see what I can see. Maybe I'll luck out and will simply be a connection that I knocked loose (riiight.)

If I find anything interesting I'll post it. Thanks everyone for the advice.

EDIT: to clarify, the screen goes from off when idle to a solid lit up white screen when I press a button. I can still dial, call, and it gets emails, I just can't see anything.

naw, if its spiderwebbed thats pretty normal for the screen to go white. it doesnt always happen, but its common. a new display from cnn.cn should run you $50ish and solve your problem

Good to know. I cracked it open tonight, & was pleasently surprise at how easy it was to disassemble it. I'll probably pick up a screen from cnn.cn next week and give it a shot.

Ha, if it works I'll then pick up a case while I'm at it. These things scratch easy enough as it is, I think it goes without saying that slingshotting it against your car door and then across a parking lot can create a lovely collage of scuffs.

Thanks everyone again for the help. I'll be suffering through a week in the carribean next week, but I'll pick up a screen when I get back & post the results.
