Default Can't communicate

I thought I was smart... but not as smart as this smartphone..

I have a new Q w/WM5.0. I have been unable to get to the Q file system via Windows Explorer OR to get ActiveSync to talk to it. Here is what I've tried:

On my primary work laptop:
Tried AS 4.5
Uninstalled 4.5, went to 4.2
Unloaded my firewall (TrendMicro)
Reloaded my firewall - input the Exceptions per the AS T-shooting doc
Tried different USB ports
Unchecked the "Enable adavanced network functions"
Re-installed AS 4.5

** After all of this, it would seem it should work! I've even had the balloons ni the system tray state Moto Q found, Hardware ready to use". I'm running XP Pro Tablet Edition on a new HP tablet.

SO, I decided to break things down - I took the Q to my home PC, running XP Home. I did a fresh install of AS 4.5. I unloaded ZoneAlarm, plugged in the Q - same exact behavior! When I plug the Q in on either machine, it beeps, AS kicks in, tries to connect, but doesn't. In Explorer, under My Computer, I see a Mobile Device, but it's blank underneath. In Device Manager, there doesn't seem to be any "junk" devices.

I've scoured Google hits looking for clues - anyone been through this before?????

try to hard reset your phone
this will loose any data you put on your phone and restore it to factory default...sometimes it just needs to be reset
since you joined our site in april im going to take an educated guess and say you just got it and are having trouble...so to do the hard reset turn off the q...turn it back on and hold down the center silver button and follow the prompts...this will remove all data on the phone and reinstall the default out of the box settings...its possible that something is screwy in the Q and just needs to be started over...but if you do have any info on there make sure you have a copy of it on your computer

Thanks - I'll try that. Do you know if that zaps the number/activation? And yes, you're right, I just got the thing a week or so ago as we changed from BB's. I need to get SSL going on it and have the instructions for it, but need file system level access to the dang thing to do it.
