Also, I had another idea - Is there any technical reason why I cant flash my phone with the sprint firmware and still use it on the VZW network?

If it's a bad idea or is going to brick my phone, someone should talk me out of it fast. The sprint update will be done downloading in like 5 minutes.
I actually think this MIGHT be the easiest ways to do jailbreak the GPS from Verizon's greedy little fingers ...

BUT, a couple of things to watch out for:
1 - make sure you have a VZW rom to flash back to ... (this goes without saying of course). I think if you have the VZW rom and RDSLite working properly, you can experiment all you want with the Sprint ROM ...

2 - once you have the Sprint ROM loaded, you may have problems with the phone knowing which service your phone should connect to ... you might need to go into the programming section of the phone to set some of the preferences - bands and towers to connect to. Although, when I upgraded my q9m to 6.1 (using the Verizon Q9c rom), I DIDN'T have to reprogram the phone settings (*228). This could mean that you won't have to change the phone radio settings (good), but it could also mean that the GPS settings won't change behavior even with a Sprint ROM (bad).

3 - in the programming section of the phone (do you know the ## code to get here?) - you will hopefully have access to the GPS settings screen. on my Q9m w/ 6.1, the GPS settings screen is disabled - you can't access this ... I think this will be the key to getting the GPS working ... so if this is unlocked with the Spring ROM, you might be MUCH closer ...

4 - assuming you can get into the GPS settings screen from the programming screen, I would guess you will need Verizon's aGPS server information - to replace Sprint's ....

Good luck - and let us know how it goes!

oooh, this is bad I think.

I was able to flash it, and RSD lite says "passed"

but the phone never comes out of bootloader mode.

I'm gonna try and put the verizon firmware back on.

I hope I hope I hope.

Yeah, its all good. I used Motorola software update to put 6.1 back on, and it's fine for the most part. gotta copy my contacts back still.

shame it wouldn't do the sprint firmware

At least you're back to operating rather than bricking the thing. Thanks for trying (for us all) and keep us posted in your endeavors. - Ray

NP, buddy.

I just came across a thread on another forum talking about a generic CDMA monster file for the q9c, as well as the sprint monster file. I think I was trying to flash with an update file, which may be why it wouldn't take.

I sent a message to the guy, I'm very, very interested in the generic cdma flash. I'll let you know .

(VZW is CDMA, right?)

I think this hack is basically going to come down to comparing the differences between the sprint and verizon q9c registrys.

I did a LOT of reading on MSDN regarding gps intermediate driver, but I dont have an answer yet.

The way I see it is:

we've got Sprint's GPS driver, we've got the same phone with the same hardware, the only thing left is to set it up exactly the same way that Sprint has theirs set up. I just dont know how to get to that point from here.

basically we just need to find out how to make the GPS intermediate driver use gpsgenericdrvr.dll. This wouldn't be a 'hack', thats the standard functionality of GPS Intermediate Driver, as far as I can tell - I just havent found the registry setting to define that yet.

Someone please figure this last part out. I'm totally getting burned out.

Not sure why all this is still going on.
Didn't earlier in this thread somebody confirm that it isn't the phone that is locking out GPS, but the network doesn't authorize anything besides to NZNav to access GPS??

If that was true, then I don't understand why the vx6800 and vx6900 users have been able to hack their devices on Verizon to open up the GPS to other programs.

One thing to note, however, is that it appears the VX6800 hack included a driver that "decrypted" the gps language from what VZNav uses to a standardized GPS language ...
