Make sure that if you modify the startup sound file, you back it up first. Whenever you mod, leave yourself a way back to stock! That's just in case your mod somehow backfires.

thanks - I ended up adding a new file because startup sound file was protected & wouldn't let me modify or delete (i would've if I could've so I guess I lucked out doubly this way . . .)

Upon power cycling the phone however, the new WAV file doesn't play. Is there some parameter that I'm missing? Do I have to rename the file to "piano.wav"?
Can you please tell me how you did that? I have been searching for a thread to get rid of the start-up WAV. Thanks in advance!!

I don't know if i'm missing something, but the hack thread doesn't fix this problem for the 9ms with updated windows v6 - I had a temporary fix but after a few days/weeks it no longer works. anyone with any suggestions on how to eliminate the start up sound on Q9 - we (i) need you!

The hack didnt work for me either.

this is what i did:
I created a short silent wave file, named it vzw_startup_sound.wav ( i used windows sound recorder - turned off the microphone, recorded silence then deleted almost all of the original recording)
backed up the built in start up vzw_startup_sound.wav
copied the silent file over to my phone, then used 'copy to' in resco file explorer to copy my silent file over the default file.
you will get a prompt to overwrite and a warning about the danger of writing to rom. (i didnt have problems continuing, but you may risk damaging your phone apparently)
I restarted the phone... Ahhh silence... except then a little beep, damn, how do get rid of that? ehh, I can live with it.

So, I recorded a soundless file and replaced my vzw_startup_sound.wav with it. There is no beep or anything. It is just silence....\bliss

I'm making the zip file available below for anyone who wants to use it.

Here is what I did:
Using the explorer window via ActiveSync, I went to the \Windows directory (where the annoying vzw_statup_sound.wav resides) on the mobile device. I copied and pasted the original *.wav file to my desktop (as a backup) and replaced it with the new file included in this post. Now you too can enjoy the silence!

Good luck.
Attached Files
File Type: zip vzw_startup_sound.zip (27.0 KB, 79 views)

I edited the registry entry to *none* and I have blissful silence on start-up
Funny thing is, on my other Q that went FUBAR, I got the short (but less annoying) start-up sound after changing to *none*.

Good luck.

For some reason I cannot do this. I have a Moto Q9m from Verizon, and it has WM6. When i use active sync explorer to try to replace, delete, or rename the existing vzw_startup_sound.wav file it gives me a permission denied error.

I even tried it from file manager on the device, and when i try to rename it, it says "files in ROM cannot be renamed".

How were you able to do this? Am I missing something?

Thanks
