Did anyone actually figure out what forcing the CPU does to the phone, what good I mean (besides wasting the battery?)

Tomorrow ought to be an "interesting" day.
I played with the threshold settings after finding a Chinese site that made me think.
I'm still not sure of why the accepted settings are 1, 2, 3 & 4.
The threshold change where the CPU switches it's speed(?).
I used:
  • Threshold104to208 -- 40
  • Threshold208to312 -- 65
  • Threshold208to104 -- 20
  • Threshold312to208 -- 30
So the CPU should switch from it's slow 104mhz speed to it's medium 208mhz speed when it's usage reaches 40%.
It will stay there until the CPU usage increases to 65%, where it will switch to it's fastest speed of 312mhz, or it will slow back down to 104mhz if the usage drops to less than 20%.
Once at the fastest speed it will stay there until the usage drops below 30%.
I'll assume it has to be spaced similar to the original settings to keep the throttling "smooth".
Just to throw a monkey wrench in the mix I changed "Disable13MhzStandby" to 0. It didn't cause the problem I thought before. Some sites will lockup IE.

Once the initial key presses "wakes it up" the phone feels quicker to respond. The best I think can be hoped for since it's not overclocking the phone just changing where/when it throttles the CPU.

Looking at processes in taskmanager the toatl usage is below 20% most of the time so it should still be dropping back to it's slowest speed.
Just in case I'll take my spare battery tomorrow and be ready to changed the settings back, I'll just have to add 20 to each (:

what were your results using these settings like? i tried using them and my q9c seems to only operate minimally better than it did with the default settings while with the 1234 settings it seemed to be significantly better.
perhaps the most noticeable differences with 'quickness' are with near idle processes? for instance, i notice a huge improvement in basic menu navigation and text message composition with the 1234 settings. while running more processor intensive applications like wmp, the difference between the above settings and 1234 is negligible

additionally those reporting default values of
Threshold104to208: 3C
Threshold208to312: 55
Threshold208to104: 28
Threshold312to208: 32

it might be worth contemplation that
hex - dec
3C = 60
55 = 85
28 = 40
32 = 20
though not the same as the original values for most users, these value make more sense than the originals... or at least they are rounded values... perhaps newer models with updated cpu scaling shipped with the phones?

There's no magic here.
All it does is force programs that wouldn't use a lot of CPU to use more.
Since WMP is CPU intensive already it doesn't make a difference in it.

Some registry editors will read hex by default that's probably more like the settings.

Change the value in Key "ProfileType" to 0.

Forces the CPU to 314 MHz. Survives a reboot fine. My guess is that IPM is a driver Motorola uses to control hardware power settings, and this directs the driver to stop CPU scaling, thereby defaulting the CPU to it's normal state of full power.

I was not satisfied with the auto CPU scaling so I poked around and eventually made this change. This area will also allow you to tweak the scaling threshold values if that is what you are into.

This edit, combined with changing the shell memory value to 96, and keeping a clean install are the only speed tweaks I use.

WM5 is Windows version 5.1.195. Windows XP is version 5.1 but uses extensive build info to denote which version it is. I imagine the power management profiles are similar between them since I'm fairly sure that WM5 is just a truncated version of XP.

In XP, the power management profiles are numbered as such in the registry:
0 = Home/Office Desk
1 = Portable/Laptop
2 = Presentation
3 = Always On
4 = Minimal Power Management
5 = Max Battery

The fact that the factory setting is 5 makes a lot of sense for a mobile device like the Q. I can't find it in the same place as XP but normally the actual settings for the different modes are in binary in the registry. Nothing you can really edit on your own.

I'm thinking of changing the thresholds so the processor almost always runs slower, might help my in-use battery life.
