mgmaps is a Java application that can load maps from several different providers. The main selling point for me was that you could download and store the maps ahead of time to avoid data charges. I've loaded high res maps of my entire state, and low res maps of the rest of the country. It's a very very cool application. Setting it up is pretty easy, they walk you through it here:

There is only one outstanding problem - mgmaps kind of sucks when run under jbed. They recommend IBM's WEME. And it works great under WEME. unfortunately IBM isn't offering it for download anymore, they say "please contact your IBM representative"

mgmaps has GPS support, but as I've got a verizon q9c, I cant test it.
